The Cowboy Within
Bruce Boxleitner and the Spirit of the West
Some stories begin long before the cameras start rolling.
For Bruce, the American West has always been more than a setting for a film or television series. He has often spoken about being a lifelong Western fan — a passion that would eventually become an important part of both his professional career and his life beyond the screen.
His journey as a Western actor began in 1975 with Gunsmoke. In 1976, he stepped into the world of The Macahans, the story that became How the West Was Won. Originally cast as Seth Macahan in the pilot, Bruce went on to portray Luke Macahan, a role that would leave a lasting mark on his career.
But the story doesn’t end with the characters he brought to life.
Horses, riding, ranch life and the traditions of the American West became part of Bruce’s own world. During the 1980s, his connection to that world extended to Pro-Celebrity Rodeos, where he took part in events including Team Penning, Team Roping and Mounted Cowboy Shooting.
From Western television to the saddle, from the ranch to the rodeo arena, this chapter explores the many ways the American West has been woven into Bruce Boxleitner’s journey.
Because sometimes, the stories we tell on screen reflect a passion that reaches far beyond it.
